Challenge

Reducing IT cost and complexity within a tight deadline

Ann Summers is a bold retail brand with a proud family heritage – rising from humble beginnings to become a staple of the British high street. Built on a mission to empower women, they’ve created a shopping experience that’s unapologetically confident, inclusive, and female-led.

However, the retailer’s central integration platform had grown overly complex and expensive to maintain. To address this, PMC suggested using their Graphene platform to shift to a composable commerce modular based approach.

The Graphene platform would simplify future integration changes, making them easier, faster and more cost effective. This would allow Ann Summers to enact transformational changes to key aspects of their operations, in time, including the in-store experience, POS, mobile commerce, and digital sales and marketing.

Known for their retail technology expertise and trusted reputation in the market, Ann Summers trusted PMC to simplify, modernise, and reduce the costs of their core commerce integration tool.

As the project progressed, it became one of the most intricate and demanding undertakings PMC had ever faced, requiring a blend of skill, expertise, and creativity to ensure its successful and timely delivery.

Approach

Reverse engineering a commerce platform

The existing integration system acted as a central platform – pulling, pushing and transforming data – between a range of different in-house and third-party downstream systems such as finance, logistics, payments, digital assets and websites. The platform also took on key business logic including injecting order data into emails, CRM texts and package label printing.

PMC’s approach was to untangle the complex web of data integrations and business logic, transforming the retailer’s enterprise architecture one piece at a time.

A key aspect of this approach was the requirement to switch to Graphene within 3 months, including design, build, testing and deployment alongside decommissioning of the incumbent integration platform. This tight deadline added urgency to the project.

In the early feasibility stages of the project, the team limited access to systems data, integration developers, and key business users due to the sensitivities of the task. During this initial feasibility phase, PMC independently reverse-engineered the existing platform and its over one hundred integrations using only configuration data, input and output examples, and sparse documentation.

When feasibility explorations confirmed the timeline and ask were achievable, broader access to the Ann Summers team was granted, enabling extensive collaboration.

Through strict business-outcome focused prioritisation, deep collaboration through digital tools and hour-by-hour engagement, proactive risk management and business communications, and clearly defined progress milestones allowing a no-fault exit, we delivered the project successfully.

Solution

PMC’s Graphene platform module DOTI

Graphene is a flexible, rapid, and robust unified commerce platform. Its foundation is built upon the fundamentals of a microservices API-led approach, cloud architecture, and a headless structure. This ensures unparalleled adaptability, agility and scalability to meet dynamic commerce needs.

DOTI stands for Data Orchestration, Transformation and Integration and was implemented by PMC on its Graphene composable commerce platform as part of the core architecture. DOTI enables decoupling of import and export logic, which is wrapped in orchestration and transformation. This makes it much simpler than a workflow-based approach that links processes through from start to finish.

Alongside the platform, this required a high level of skill from PMC’s architectural team to reverse engineer the former system, with an innovative and intuitive design that replicated its logic within the DOTI module framework.

Outcome

A cost-efficient, agile integration commerce platform

PMC’s Graphene unified commerce platform has equipped Ann Summers with a reliable and cost-efficient integration solution alongside access to a commerce solution with the choice and flexibility needed for future growth.

In terms of costs, the new approach significantly lowers running expenses, reduces the cost of change, and ensures cost stability, with PMC’s experienced services team managing Graphene on Ann Summers’ behalf.

The success of this retail transformation project is largely attributed to the strong partnership between Ann Summers and PMC – characterised by openness, transparency, and collaboration from start to finish.

PMC’s Graphene unified commerce platform has meant that every commerce-related digital process can now be transformed – from web payment refunds and order label printing for our pick, pack and despatch teams to our third-party business partners. We are now ready to scale, and have a technology partner who can advise, develop and support new integrations which support our growth strategy. This benefits teams in both businesses and, most importantly, our customers.
