Challenge

Redesigning a labour-intensive catalogue design process

Lifetime Brands designs, develops and markets a broad range of branded home consumer products, selling them directly to supermarkets and department stores as well as independents, specialists and others.

To showcase their products, Lifetime Brands produces an extensive extensive catalogue multiple times a year curated specifically to different countries and markets, featuring thousands of products and up to 800 pages. However, the catalogue creation process can be time-consuming and labour-intensive, often taking many months and a considerable effort from the marketing and design teams to complete.

The one-size-fits-all approach would limit the sales team, as different retailers stocked varying ranges and required tailored catalogues. This meant they only needed to see a subset of the full catalogue instead of the entire selection. Any design rework or ad hoc requests from the sales team had to be handled manually, leading to a significant amount of additional work to make sure customer’s needs and requirements were met.

To address these challenges, Lifetime Brands sought a solution that would empower its business development managers and sales teams to create retailer-specific catalogues quickly and efficiently, allowing them to operate independently of the design team, but within the structure of Lifetime Brands’ approach to producing high quality material.

Approach

In-depth discovery and architecture design

PMC initiated a greenfield project for Lifetime Brands, using interviews and workshops to design a solution that enables them to create digital catalogues.

The goal was to allow key stakeholders at Lifetime Brands to easily access specific product information and use it to design and generate custom PDF catalogues, which could then be printed, downloaded, or shared.

PMC developed the functional and technical architecture, the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) all from scratch. The solution was built using the Next.js, React.js, Material UI components, and hosted on AWS.

Additionally, PMC integrated with Lifetime Brands’ Product Information Management (PIM) system to pull vital product data. PMC’s cloud ops and managed services teams also implemented, hosted, and provided ongoing support for the solution.

Solution

Cloud-enabled catalogue creation

A key requirement of the application was to quickly and easily access product information so that both designers and sales personnel could create ad hoc catalogues within a short timeframe.

To enable this, PMC’s technical team worked with Lifetime Brands’ stakeholders to develop an alternative solution. They implemented schedulers to pull all product data from the PIM into PMC’s AWS databases, allowing the application to access it instantly and securely. These schedulers run throughout the day to reflect any product updates, though manual updates can be done if needed.

From a UX standpoint, the catalogues needed to be compatible with PCs and larger tablets. Additionally, the solution had to balance automated design elements with enough flexibility for designers to be creative.

The solution also required the ability to filter data by item type, region, and season, while catalogues had to conform to a large custom page format. This impacted both the printing process and how images, descriptions, spaces, and margins were displayed—with millimetre precision.

PMC’s catalogue generation solution has transformed the way Lifetime Brands’ designers, sales team, and customers work. By converting a bulky, physical sales tool into a flexible, compact digital asset, the solution has not only streamlined workflows but also enabled the company to respond quickly to changing customer demand. The digital catalogue is easily accessible across devices, giving teams and customers instant access to the latest product information, reducing storage and distribution costs, and supporting sustainability goals. Designed to scale with Lifetime Brands’ future growth, this solution empowers the company to operate more effectively and deliver an agile, customer-focused experience.

With the solution up and running, Lifetime Brands is now evaluating further use cases, such as tailored marketing campaigns, promo catalogues for specific product ranges, and sales presentations.
