Bodycare's Sheffield comeback store opens to queues, powered by PMC's AI-first technology

Oxford, UK - 22 July 2026

Bodycare’s return to the UK high street had its first real-world test this month, and by all accounts, it passed. The retailer’s new store at The Moor in Sheffield opened to queues out the door, with staff reportedly having to buy ropes to manage the crowd on opening day.

It was phenomenal. We had queues outside and we had to buy ropes as so many people wanted to come in. We’ve already had customers tell me they’ve been back two or three times. Traffic is above our expectations, sales are above our expectations, but more importantly, all types of customers have come through the door and are finding a really terrific shopping experience.

It’s a striking turnaround. Just over a year ago, all 147 of Bodycare’s stores had closed following its fall into administration, driven by rising rents and other pressures. A month after that, an investment group led by The Body Shop and Molton Brown’s former chief executive Charles Denton acquired the business, with a plan to relaunch it as an ‘AI-first’ retailer.

That plan needed an opening day that could actually hold up under pressure, and it’s here that PMC, as Bodycare’s technology partner, has been doing much of the work out of sight. The checkout environment, assisted, mobile and self-service, ran on PMC’s Graphene Engage Platform, while its Connect Integration Layer was pulling data from POS, network and in-store cameras into the AI platform in real time, rather than after the fact.

That same connected foundation is what makes the rest of the store’s AI-first ambitions possible. More than 30 cameras feed the platform with real-time insight, down to flagging when a shelf no longer matches its planogram, while a free-to-book content studio lets local creators film TikTok and other social content, streamed live to the street via digital displays.

We wanted AI to enable local optimisation and community. We had a vision to make this a great place to work, interact with customers, and have people have a really great time.

Customers have got to feel like they’re in a digital space – with a click of a button I could display us to the street on a big digital display, for everyone walking by to see.

The Sheffield launch is the first of a rollout that’s now picking up pace, with customers in Leicester, Leeds, Sunderland, Glasgow and Luton awaiting their own local openings.

Bodycare has also flagged a run of further initiatives to build on the early momentum, including free piercing services, facials and scalp assessments, click and collect, regular TikTok Live sessions, new categories such as Korean beauty, and a push into marketplaces like Amazon and TikTok Shop, alongside a target of 50 UK stores within two years, and ambitions to eventually take the model abroad.
